The invention relates to a coating material which changes colour according to the temperature, and to a surface coating produced with said coating material, especially a coating material and a coating containing at least one colouring pigment whose transmittance changes according to the temperature. There are pigments which change their transmittance according to the temperature while maintaining a constant wavelength, until a temperature is reached at which they are completely transparent. Examples of these are the commercially available pigments known by their brand name Chromazones . These colorants are available in different colours and for different "transition temperatures", i.e. temperatures at which the colorants finally become transparent. By mixing pigments of this type and optionally, pigments whose colour is invariable, it is possible to obtain mixed colours whose colour changes when individual pigments become transparent and which therefore change at the corresponding transition temperatures. The invention also relates to different uses of these coatings.
