A master cylinder (12) for a hydraulic vehicle brake installation has: - a housing (14) which bounds a filling chamber (16) and a primary pressure chamber (18). The master cylinder also includes: - a filling piston (28) located inside the filling chamber in sliding fashion; - a primary piston (32) located inside the primary pressure chamber in sliding fashion; and - a pump (52) which is located in a line connected with the filling chamber. Between the filling piston and the primary piston is located at least one elastic transmission member (48). Between the filling piston and the primary piston is located a bit of free play as well.
