Two adjustably converging arms (2,3) carry centering mounts (6,7) facing each other to address the respective ankle bones (9,10). A device (13-16) connected to the arms finds their position with the aid of a geometrically determined mounting for a scanning instrument whose own position can be found by a navigation system using the fixed spacing of the elements (13-16) of the device. The device is placed where the arms join and the arms move symmetrically both sides of the join, preferably in a swivel movement.
