A cartridge filter element, for use with gases or liquids, has axial flexibility, pref. by virtue of a bellows section in external wall, so that it fits filter of slightly varying size, leaks being prevented by pressure within element forming compressible end seals against facings of filter, e.g. for use with water, element pref. comprises an outer partly flexible cylindrical casing, with a concentric rigid inner cylinder, fitted in annular grooves at extremities. Water enters orifices in outer cylinder at one end, traverses a softening bed (e.g. of CaCO3 crystals), a bed of active carbon, and a filter (e.g. of woven textile laminates), and then passes through orifices in inner cylinder at other end of element to exit. |
