If for real-time data (DAT) generated in a network element (DSW), which are to be transmitted over a transmission link (TLN), the data transmission is disabled and the buffers (BUF) are being filled to a flushing threshold, the data present in the buffers are flushed (bfl) to a permanent storage medium as backup data (BAF). When data transmission over the link is enabled, backup data (BAF) are read out (bdr) into the buffers (BUF) when the amount of filled buffers is smaller than a first threshold value and as long as the amount of filled buffers lies below a second threshold value. <IMAGE>
