PURPOSE: An apparatus for transmitting and receiving a broadcasting format is provided to compress a 16:9 signal source nonlinearly at a broadcasting station side and to expand horizontal compression nonlinearly at a receiving side, to eliminate distortion of an image. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for transmitting and receiving a broadcasting format includes a transmitter, a data detector(101), a broadcasting format detector(102), an S corrector(110), and a vertical amplification controller(111). The transmitter varies a horizontal compression degree of a 16:9 signal source loaded in an active section of the nth horizontal line of a vertical retrace period to transmit the signal source together with a video signal. The data detector detects wide screen data from the video signal. The broadcasting format detector encodes and decodes the wide screen data to generate various control signals. The S corrector nonlinearly expands a deflection signal obtained by a horizontal driver to control horizontal deflection of a color image receiving tube. The vertical amplification controller converts a vertical synchronous signal into a vertical deflection signal to control vertical deflection of the color image receiving tube.
