A powered wheelchair has two powered wheels 11 each controlled by a respective lever 52. Each lever 52 pivots an element 51 to place a driving roller 33 or a brake rod 41 into contact with the surface of the wheel 11. There is also a neutral position in which neither is in contact with the wheel and the chair may then be pushed by hand. The driving rollers are powered by a single motor 31, which may be electric, as shown, or a fuel-powered engine. The seat 20 is detachable for transport by an automobile.
