[Class 80 (ii)] A gear lever, of the type mounted on the steering-column or dash of a vehicle, is pivoted on a bracket attached to the gear control shaft about an axis offset to the centreline of the lever and at right-angles to the control shaft, and has a catch for reverse gear. A lever 9, for controlling a four speed and reverse gearbox, is pivoted about an axis 11 on a bracket 8 attached to the gear control shaft 1 and is pivoted about a rod 5 held in a bush 6 rigid with the steering column 2, a spring 7 being interposed between the rod 5 and the shaft 1. A slot 15 in the tube 3 allows a rounded projection 13 on the casting 10 to engage a hole 14 in the rod 4, and so raise or lower the shaft 1 by movement of the lever 9 about the axis 11. At its lower end the control shaft 1 carries a hook-like selector lever 30 which selectively engages the slots 29 in the three double arm control levers 25, 26, 27 actuating the gearbox selectors. For the reverse gear the knob 17 at the end of the lever 9 is depressed against the spring 19 to move the upturned end of a rod 16, within the lever, clear of the underside of the top of the bracket 8 to the aperture 21 and thus allow additional downward movement of the lever 9 to engage the selector lever 30 with the control lever 27. |
