PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to obtain superiority in display quality by using a light source of high directivity. CONSTITUTION: A transmission liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display element(2), a light source(1) arranged at the rear of the liquid crystal display element, polarizing units(2i,2j) arranged to interpose the liquid crystal display element, and a light diffusing unit(3) arranged on the front side of the polarizing unit in the front of the liquid crystal display element. The light source and the light diffusing unit are designed to satisfy a formula 1 where BL(&thgr; ) is an exit angle &thgr; of the light source(luminance characteristics) and LC(&thgr; ) is an entrance angle &thgr; in the bright state of the liquid crystal element(transmittance characteristics) and DIF(a, &thgr; ) is an incidence angle &thgr; for a light reception angle(a) of the light diffusing unit(transmittance characteristics).
