PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a water-soluble crosslinked copolymer powder by the precipitation polymerization whereby the attachment of a polymer to the wall and agitation blade of a polymerization reaction vessel, the increase of a suspension viscosity or the increase of non-reacted monomer due to the reduction of the heat conductivity, the variation in quality, the reduction of yield and the bumping of a solvent or the like are not observed, the operation can be safely performed and obtained polymer is excellent. SOLUTION: The powder is produced by polymerizing an ethylenic unsaturated lower carboxylic acid or their salt and a crosslinked monomer in a solvent, wherein the monomer is dissolved and a polymer is not dissolved, with the dividing addition to the vessel.
