PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent jamming of sheets of paper caused by the upward warp of paper and to convey the sheets of paper without causing skewing, jamming, and wrinkling of the sheets of paper which may be caused by a pair of side rollers when the sheets are conveyed. SOLUTION: This paper feeder 5 includes a paper feed tray 35 on which a stack of printing paper is placed; a separating plate 38 provided in a position downstream of the paper feed tray 35 along paper conveyance direction; and primary paper feed rollers 36 including a center roller 71 disposed to approximately abut against the separating plate 38, and a pair of side rollers 72 and 72 which together rotate in positions on both sides of the center roller 7. The sheets of printing paper conveyed from the paper feed tray 35 onto the separating plate 38 are conveyed only one at a time by both a conveying force produced by the rotation of the primary paper feed rollers 36 and resistance to conveyance produced by the separating plate 38. The pair of side rollers 72 comprise rollers having a smaller conveying force than the center roller 71 while having a conveying force for the printing paper.
