PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tetracarboxylic dianhydride useful as a raw material for polyimides and their precursors, a curing agent for epoxy resins and the like, and excellent in hydrolysis resistance, pliability and flexibility, and provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: A specific tetracarboxylic acid and its derivative and a specific tetranitrile are produced. This method for producing a tetracarboxylic dianhydride expressed by general formula (1) (wherein R is H, a halogen, a 1-10C alkyl or halogenated alkyl and plural Rs are mutually same or different; X expresses a divalent organic group including a carbon to carbon double bond or an aromatic ring; p expresses 0 or 1; k, m and n are each independently 1-10 integer) is to dehydrate and cyclize the specific tetracarboxylic acid.
