PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device capable of easily installing a cage equipped with a speed regulating mechanism in an elevator shaft having a small cross-sectional plane area, and certainly driving the speed regulating mechanism. SOLUTION: The car 3 is suspended by wrapping main rope 4 on a sheave 16 journalled to the car 3, and an emergency stopping device 6 acting for braking a descent of the car 3 when necessary is provided on the cage 3. The speed regulating mechanism acting when the rotating speed of the sheave 16 exceeds a specified value is provided on the car 3, and a transmitting means 42 actuated through the action of the speed regulating mechanism so as to make the emergency stopping device 6 act is provided. Therefore, the speed regulating mechanism is rotated with the sheave 16 rotated by the main rope 4, so that overspeed elevating can be precisely detected. The car 3 equipped with the speed regulating mechanism can be easily installed even in the elevator shaft having a small cross-sectional area.
