A real-time maintenance alert system (10) for use in a heavy duty truck having an engine (12) including a transmission (13), and an engine controller (22) having a communications data link is provided. The system comprises a sensor (20), control logic at the engine controller, and a display device (40) having a memory. The sensor operates to produce a signal representing information indicative of a transmission oil level (66) in the transmission. The control logic processes the transmission oil level information and determines a transmission oil level real-time fault condition when the transmission oil level falls below a threshold. The control logic produces an output signal at the data link in response to the transmission oil level real-time fault condition, and the display device is configured to transmit and receive information over the data link. The display device processes the output signal and stores a status of the transmission oil level in the memory. The display device generates an output signal indicative of the status. |
