PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a friction material for an aluminum disk rotor giving higher performances than conventional friction materials for the aluminum disk rotor. SOLUTION: The friction material for an aluminum disk rotor is obtained by forming a composition for a friction material which is a mixture comprising a base material, a binder and a friction modifier containing a hard inorganic powder, and has a porosity of at least 20%, when letting the total volume of the friction material be 100%, and a cumulative volume of pores having A pore size of at least 1μm of at most 2%. In other words, suppression of the cumulative volume of pores having a pore size of at least 1μm to at most 2% permits improvement in the skeletal strength of the friction material and lowering of a friction amount of the friction material. A risk of lowering in the porosity of the friction material accompanied by decrease in fading resistance which might be caused by reduction in pore sizes throughout the friction material can be avoided by setting the porosity of the friction material to at least 20%.
