PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a freshness-retaining agent in which all constituent materials have biodegradability and which is highly safe and inexpensive. SOLUTION: This freshness-retining agent is constituted of a water absorbing material having biodegradability and a water permeable sheet having biodegradability. The water absorbing material comprises galactomannan, boron ions and multivalent metal ions having >=3 valence.
