PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus which can detect an interval between a recording head and a position of the rear face side of a recording medium and can carry out optimum image recording in conformity with the detected interval. SOLUTION: An ink jet recording apparatus has a carriage for serially moving the recording head for discharging ink liquid drops, a position-detecting means for detecting a position of the carriage, a changing means for changing the interval between the rear face position of the recording medium at a position opposite to the recording head and the recording head, and a recognizing means for recognizing a state of the changing means on the basis of information of the position-detecting means.
