SOLUTION: A recording apparatus has an automatic sheet thickness-adjusting mechanism 65 for detecting a sheet thickness of the supplied sheet and adjusting a platen gap between a recording head 18 and a platen 20 in accordance with the sheet thickness. Moreover, a first sheet detector 45 capable of detecting the sheet is set to a carriage 19 where the recording head is loaded. After the automatic sheet thickness-adjusting mechanism carries out detecting the sheet thickness and adjusting the platen gap, a control substrate 75 for controlling the recording apparatus detects a leading end of the sheet by the first detector thereby accessing the sheet.
