PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a friction material containing organic dust and not suffering from deterioration by heat in friction performances. SOLUTION: This friction material is obtained by compounding and molding a base fiber, a binding material, a friction modifier and a filler, where the friction modifier is formed by compounding a grinding agent, a lubricant, organic dust and a metal powder, the organic dust having incorporated thereinto a polyimide resin powder in an amount of 2-20 vol.% based on 100 vol.% of the friction material, thereby effecting little change in the friction coefficient during use.
