PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly and efficiently wash a filter member. SOLUTION: In a water cleaning apparatus, water to be treated is introduced into a tank 10 filled with a large number of granular filter members 5 and this introduced water passes through the filter members 5 from above to below to be discharged to the outside of the tank 10 while cleaned. At the time of washing of the filter members 5, washing water is introduced into the tank 10 in such a state that the filter members 5 are stirred by stirring blades 33 while air is introduced into the filter members 5 in the tank 10 from below and this introduced water is passed through the filter members 5 from below to above.
