PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent degradation of an EL device due to heat, light, moisture, oxygen, or the like. SOLUTION: In a spontaneous light emitting display using a heat-resistant metal substrate used as a device forming substrate 100, and an organic resin substrate used as a cover material 104 for sealing, a hard carbon film 119 (5 to 500 nm) is formed on the surface of the organic resin substrate or the surface of the sealant 105 as an overcoat which prevents permeation of steam or the like.
