PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable telephone capable of selecting and reproducing an appropriate response message depending on the situation and notifying the message to the other party. SOLUTION: A plurality of response messages are stored in a storage unit 3, and keys except for a key for starting a call are assigned in accordance with to an input unit 5 the respective response messages. When an assigned key is pressed within a predetermined period from a message arrival, a corresponding response message is reproduced and transmitted. When an assigned key or the key for starting a call is not pressed within a determined period from a message arrival, a response message which is not assigned to any key is reproduced and transmitted.
