PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-speed vertical cavity surface emitting laser diode for which the items to be examined in designing the laser for improving the data communication speed of the laser can be specified and can reduce the parasitic capacitance of a device and, at the same time, can triumph over the conventional failure. SOLUTION: A vertical cavity surface emitting laser(VCSEL) includes a conductor portion (180); an insulating portion (240) having an opening demarcating surface which demarcates the conductor portion (180), an inner section, and an outer section; and a material layer (188) capable of insulating portion to have an insulating property and having a trench (102) for insulating the part of the insulating portion from the outer section to the inner section for forming the insulating portion.
