PURPOSE: A digital video disk player having PIP function and a method of controlling the player are provided to switch a DVD reproduced picture or TV picture to a mother picture or sun picture according to a user's selection and to control the size of the sun picture. CONSTITUTION: A digital video disk player having PIP function includes a tuner(20) for selecting a desired channel, a video detector(30) for detecting a channel signal applied to the tuner, an audio detector(40) for detecting an audio signal extracted by the video detector, and a DVD data extracting unit(50) for extracting a video signal and an audio signal from a digital video disk to output MPEG bit streams. The DVD player further has an MPEG decoder(70) for decoding the output data of the DVD data extracting unit, a video switch(72,74) for outputting the video signal as a mother picture and a sun picture, an audio switch(76,78) for outputting the audio signal as the sounds of a mother picture and a sun picture, a PIP module(80) for outputting the video signal as a mother pictures and a sun pictures and setting the size of the sun picture, and a video signal processor(90) for converting the digital video signal output from the PIP module into an analog signal. The DVD player also has an audio signal processor(110) for converting the digital audio signal output from the audio switch into an analog signal, and a CRT(100) for displaying the video signal output from the video signal processor.
