PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbon material for an electric double-layer capacitor electrode, capable of constituting an electric double-layer capacitor, whose electrode density is high and whose capacitance per unit volume is high. SOLUTION: The carbon material for the electric double-layer capacitor electrode is obtained, in such a way that a raw material pitch whose softening point is 150 to 350 deg.C, in which the atomic ratio (H/C) of hydrogen to carbon is 0.50 to 0.90 and whose optical anisotropy content is 50% or higher is heat- treated and activation-treated.
