PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform an efficient system operation by realizing a reduction in load of an operator who is a corrector when performing a character recognition by reading a handwritten character entered in a document by an OCR device and displaying the result of the character recognition to correct it. SOLUTION: In this character recognition method, the character recognition is performed by reading, from a document having a plurality of numerical value entry columns and a total value entry column for entering the total thereof, hand written characters entered in the numerical value entry columns and the total value entry column. When the total value of the results of the respective character recognitions for the numerical value entry columns is differed from the result of the character recognition for the total value entry column, the difference value between the both is displayed together with a message of this effect.
