PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily connect an optional external device in which a protocol for data communication is different to a programmable display device 3 which is connected to external devices 1 through data communicating means 2 and can perform display corresponding to the state data stored in the memories of the external devices 1 on the screen 15 of a display 14. SOLUTION: The programmable display device is provided with a plurality of communication ports to which the external devices 1 are connected and also a means for setting a communication protocol common to each of the communication ports. Meanwhile, a user side prepares protocol information corresponding to an external device to be connected and can rewrite the protocol information as necessary.
