PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a circuit and a method for detecting the fault of a writing head of a hard disk drive system. SOLUTION: A 1st resistor (R1) and a 2nd resistor (R2) are connected in series between both ends of a coil (L) of the writing head (18), and a transistor (Q1) is connected between a common connection point of the above resistors (R1), (R2) and ground connection. The current I0 is made to flow into the coil L during the period of the quiet operation mode of the disk drive system (70) so that the detection of fault is not affected by the frequency, then the voltages Vab and Vac of the resistors (R1) and (R2) are analyzed by the writing fault detecting circuits (30, 40), and when the fault occurs, the discrimination is made whether the fault is caused by the short-circuit to the ground or the opened state.
