PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-efficiency semiconductor laser which suppresses the increase of its threshold current and the decline of its slope efficiency and intermittently performs laser oscillation, and to provide a method for manufacturing the laser, a semiconductor laser array, a display device, a sensor system, and a semiconductor light emitting device. SOLUTION: In the semiconductor laser device having a laminated structure containing an active layer 106 formed on a semiconductor substrate 101, a carrier barrier layer 102 the barrier height or width of which periodically changes depending on carrier density is provided in the route through which a current is injected into the active layer 106.
