PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce variation in speed due to retrial when a recording medium having information of low recording quality on the whole is reproduced. SOLUTION: A drive controller 9 judges whether or not data recorded on an optical disk 10 have EDC/ECC in its sector when the data are reproduced and reproduces the sector while lowering the possible maximum speed of rotational driving of the optical disk 10 to a specific value when judging that there is no EDC/ECC.
