PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an eddy current decelerator which is smaller and lighter than an eddy current decelerator utilizing conventional electromagnets and enables switching between a non-braking position and a braking position by the control of currents of electromagnetic coils only without moving a magnet support ring. SOLUTION: A fixed magnet support plate 67 comprising an annular plate is provided in a brake drum 62 connected to a rotary shaft 61. A large number of electromagnets 80 are arranged circumferentially at the same intervals and supported by the magnet support plate 67. The electromagnets 80 comprise a core 72 composed of a large number of electromagnetic steel plates which have a large number of pole pieces 72b protruding from the outer circumferential edge of the annular plate 72a and facing the inner circumferential surface of the brake drum 62 and are laminated, and electromagnetic coils 69 wound on the pole pieces 72b. Permanent magnets 74 are buried in the hollow parts 76 of the respective pole pieces 72b. By applying currents to the electromagnets 80, a braking force are generated in the brake drum by eddy currents induced by the magnetic fields of the electromagnets 80 and the permanent magnets 74.
