Hazardous waste (with C:N ratio of 10:1 to 35:1, preferably 30:1, moisture content of 40-60%, preferably 50%, with a preferable density of 700 kg/ cm.m.) is loaded in a loosely packed state into a fermentation chamber. The chamber is provided with forced ventilation, to ensure accelerated fermentation of the waste material. During fermentation the air supply is controlled automatically, to maintain the oxygen concentration in the chamber above 1.5% by volume. The temperature of the waste material in the chamber is maintained at a minimum of 65 deg.C for at least 72 hours. |
