Shifting device and method for the working rolls (12a, 12b) of a rolling stand (11), wherein each working roll (12a, 12b) is mounted rotatable on a pair of chocks (26) which are able to slide axially with respect to the housings (23) of the rolling stand (11), first actuator means (20, 24) are provided to shift each of the working rolls (12a, 12b), together with the corresponding chocks (26), between extreme working positions defined by a first position (Pos. Max) wherein the width of the rolled product (13) is maximum (Wmax) and a second position (Pos. Min) wherein the width of the rolled product (13) is minimum (Wmin); the position (Pos.0) wherein the chocks (26) of both working rolls (12a, 12b) are substantially aligned on vertical planes passing through the housings (23) of the rolling stand (11) corresponds to the position wherein the working rolls (12a, 12b) are in a median position between the two extreme working positions (Pos. Max and Pos. Min).
