PURPOSE: A microwave oven and control method are provided to prevent and sense a fire by the proper operation of a cooking heater. CONSTITUTION: A microwave oven and control method are composed of a cooking heater heating the food within a cooking chamber; a temperature sensor for the cooking chamber; an alarm unit; a memory storing a first overheat temperature and a second overheat temperature which is lower than the first overheat; a controller stopping power supplying to the cooking heater if the value of the temperature sensor is more than the first overheat temperature in case of being supplying power to the cooking heater, and generating an alarm through the alarm unit if the value of the temperature sensor is more than the second overheat temperature in case of being not supplying power to the cooking heater.
