A method, system, and computer program product for managing the storage resources is described. Service agents query devices of the SAN for status information. The service agents forward the status information they receive to a storage resource manager. The storage resource manager parses the parameters of the status information according to the devices to which they relate. The storage resource manager sends notifications to users when a parameter does not meet a predefined rule. The storage resource manager further translates the parameters of the status information to provide additional information for analysis. The system allows the user to provide instructions to alter the operation of devices based on information reported to the user by the system. The one or more devices are part of the storage area network.
