<p>A virtual private branch exchange (VPBX) (115, 120) enables plural individuals to be associated with a single telephone number. When a call is received (6020), the VPBX retrieves a profile based on the called number (6030). The profile includes a list of individuals associated with the called number, their extension number, and instructions concerning their personal communications requirements. A menu is presented to the caller based on the profile which gives a plurality of choices (6040, 6050, 6060). Choices include contact of particular individual, device, or service, such as an individual extension, common voice mail system, or administrative person such as a receptionist. Upon selection of routing to a VPBX extension, the call is routed to the extension (6070) and monitored for answer (6090) with connection upon answer. If no answer, the profile is checked for other instructions (6100) such as routing to voice mail or activation of a Find-me system.</p> |
