Automatic amplification control of a signal amplifier for use in broad band communications networks using a peak value detector and stepwise adjustment of signal amplitudes so that they lie within a chosen range

Circuit has a peak value detector (16) for measurement of the signal amplitude of an analogue signal output from a signal amplifier (8). A comparator circuit (20) compares the measured peak value with upper and lower threshold values and yields digital display data that indicates whether the peak value is below a lower threshold or above an upper threshold. A digital control circuit is used to change the amplifier gain until the measured signal amplitude lies between the two thresholds. An Independent claim is made for a method for automatic amplification control for a signal amplifier.
