A needle holder (11, 111) has a variety of features that make it an optimal device for safe storage and disposal of hypodermic needles (51, 119). The needle holder (11, 111) of the present invention includes at least one hypodermic needle retainer (45) for engaging and keeping a hypodermic needle (51, 113). Further, the needle holder (11, 111) includes a receptacle that may accomodate surgical needles or other small sharps or biologically contaminated articles. The needle holder (11, 111) may be easily and conveniently employed in a variety of settings. Alternative embodiments will accomodate double-ended hypodermic needles (113), and will also accommodate larger versions of hypodermic needles (51) such as thoracic, cardiac, or spinal needles.
