A method of quality examination of a cerium based abrasive material which permits simple and easy examination of abrasive characteristics of the material; a method for producing a cerium based abrasive material having specific abrasive characteristics; and a cerium based abrasive material having given characteristics according to the use thereof are disclosed. The method uses the X-ray diffraction method, and quality examination is carried out, for example, on the basis of a value B/A calculated from a peak intensity A and a peak intensity B corresponding to LnxOy and LnF3, respectively.
