METHOD FOR TOUGHENING MODIFICATION OF CERAMIC AND CERAMIC PRODUCT

A method for toughening modification of a ceramic, which comprises subjecting a ceramic sintered body to shot blasting at an ordinary temperature, to thereby deform the body plastically and thus impart a residual stress to it, subjecting the resulting body to a heat treatment to recrystallize fine cracks, thereby forming a dislocated cell at a grain boundary and decreasing the size of a crystal, resulting in significant improvement in fracture toughness, and after the heat treatment, removing a part of the modified surface layer containing the dislocated cell by polishing, to thereby significantly improve the mechanical strength thereof. When the ceramic sintered body is a thin walled article, shot blasting of the both surfaces thereof achieves an effective toughening of the body.
