A method of charging the user of a car parking bay (2) comprises displaying an identifier (5) in or adjacent to the parking bay, the identifier being unique to that parking bay or to a group of parking bays, establishing a connection from a mobile wireless device to a remote service operator using the identifier as an address, establishing the identity of the user of the mobile wireless device at the remote service operator, and charging the user for an appropriate sum.
