Process for bonding a workpiece (1) made of a material with a high carbon content to a workpiece (2) made of a material with a low carbon content at a joining gap (3) using electron beam welding comprises laying the workpieces in the holding device; joining the workpieces to produce a joining gap containing no appreciable air; laying a first weld seam (4) in the joining gap; and laying a second weld seam (5) a distance (6) away from the original joining gap in the workpiece with the low carbon content. A plate made of a material with a high nickel content can be optionally placed between the workpieces before joining. Preferred Features: The distance (6) is determined experimentally so that the heat flowing into the workpiece is sufficient to break down the martensite content of the first weld seam by annealing.
