Convenient and precise sensing of information of panniculus (fatty layers, muscular layers, osseous tissue layers, etc.) in the depth direction immediately under a living body surface. In one working mode, a linear layout of a pair of current-carrying electrodes (1a, 1b) and a pair of probes (2a, 2b) in contact with the surface of a living body (5) so that the smaller area probe (2a) may be close to the smaller area current-carrying electrode (1a). A voltage between the probes (2a, 2b) is sensed by a sensor (4) with a constant current flowing between the current-carrying electrodes (1a, 1b) from a high-frequency current source (3). The probe (2a) comes to be at a potential almost equal to a contact position (P3) of the current-carrying electrode (1a), and the probe (2b) comes to be at a potential almost equal to that of the deepest position (P1) of a longitudinal region (5c) inside the living body (5). Therefore, the potential difference between both top and bottom ends of the longitudinal region (5c) is measured by the sensor (4), so that the bioelectric impedance (Zv) of the longitudinal portion (5c) is calculated from this potential difference and a current value (i).
