A method of manufacturing a flume

A method of manufacturing a flume comprises the following steps. A core is constructed to the nominal dimensions of a throat section of the flume it is desired to produce. The width of the throat section of the core at a plurality of different locations is measured and recorded. Flexible side portions of the flume are then separately manufactured to the same nominal dimensions as corresponding portions of the core. The side portions are fastened to the core to make an assembly which is held in close contact with the corresponding portion of the core along its edges. The assembly is then located in a channel where the flume is to be formed and backfilled with a construction material e.g concrete which presses the flexible side portions against the core over substantially the whole of their adjacent surfaces. The construction material is permitted to solidify to retain the assembly rigid and in the correct position relative to the core whilst being pressed against the core. Thereafter the core is removed from the assembly to leave the assembly to form the appropriate portions of the throat section of the flume. The measurements previously taken of the core are then to produce calibration data for the flume.
