PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display apparatus, capable off displaying an image of high luminance at a low cost. SOLUTION: White light, radiated from a discharge lamp 521 in the projection type display device, is separated into three red, green and blue optical paths by a dichroic mirror 523. A microlens array 581 is arranged on the incident side of a liquid crystal display panel, and a microlens 582 is arranged so as to correspond to red, green and blue pixels. A lens 391 is arranged on the light projection side of the display panel via a photocoupling layer. The display device is provided also with three red, green and blue liquid crystal display panels, and a dichroic prism connected optically to these panels composites the light components modulated by respective panels.
