PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler having a lightweight silencing member superior in assemblability. SOLUTION: This muffler is composed of an inner cylinder 1 having a number of small holes 11 on its outer peripheral part for introducing an exhaust gas, and silencing members 2 respectively having a braided member 9 of metallic fine wires 21 as the foundation, having the ring-shaped configuration of a predetermined width formed by a predetermined forming means, and arranged in parallel in a state of axially contact with each other on an outer peripheral part with the small holes 11, of the inner cylinder 1. A heat insulating layer 6 is formed on the inner cylinder 1 and the outer peripheral parts of the ring- shaped silencing members 2 through a predetermined sealed space 5, and an outer cylinder 7 holding the heat insulating layer 6 in a sealed state is mounted outside of the heat insulating layer 6.
