PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize a stratified combustion by being combined with a variable valve system. SOLUTION: This cylinder direct injection type internal combustion engine is so constituted that an ignition plug is disposed in an approximately center of a combustion chamber recessedly provided in a cylinder head side, the shallow dish type combustion chamber is recessedly provided in a crown of a piston along a normal tumble flow, a fuel injection valve is disposed so as to inject fuel in the direction diagonally downward to the cylinder central line, and part of spray injected from the fuel injection valve straightly heads for the ignition plug. An intake valve is provided with a lift/operation angle variable mechanism expanding/contracting the lift/operation angles and a phase variable mechanism changing the phase of the operation angle. In the stratified combustion, an intake valve opening timing is set so as to optimize the inside exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) and an intake valve closing timing is set so as to optimize the spray penetration, that is, the cylinder pressure.
