<p>Conditions in a wellbore (200) are detected and monitored using an array (210) in the borehole (200), the array comprising a series of data accumulation hubs (212), connected together by high speed communication backbone (220) for routing a limited number of data and power cables. Each hub (212) is connected to arrays (216) of sensor pods (218) which contain the actual sensor elements and minimal, if any, interface electronics. The data from the individual sensors (218) are accumulated in the hubs (212), buffered, and conditioned for transmission to the surface data acquisition system through the high speed metal backbone (220) comprising multiple paths of transmission for redundancy in the event of failure. The array (210) may be fixed to the drilling string (206) or to the well casing (204). The array is therefore suitable for long term monitoring of conditions in the borehole.</p> |
