PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent clogging in an EGR cooler without unnecessarily increasing nitrogen oxides (NOX) discharged from the internal combustion engine of com pression ignition type provided with an EGR device and the EGR cooler. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine is provided with an exhaust gas recycling passage for introducing to a suction passage one portion of an exhaust gas flowing in an exhaust gas passage in the internal combustion engine, and with a cooling mechanism for cooling an exhaust gas flowing in the exhaust gas recycling passage placed on the way of the exhaust gas recycling passage. By advancing a fuel injection time of the nearest cylinder closest to a connecting portion of the exhaust passage with the exhaust gas recycling passage, an amount of an unburned fuel component contained in the exhaust gas exhausted from the nearest cylinder is reduced, thereby decreasing the amount of the unburned fuel component contained in the recycled gas. |
