PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enlarge a using range of a stratified combustion by determining an operating zone where the stratified combustion is carried out depending on fuel volatility. SOLUTION: Fuel volatility is discriminated from a knock control amount, a condition for performing the stratified combustion is previously stored in a map for every discriminated volatility, and an actual operating condition is compared with the operating condition read out from the map selected according to the fuel volatility to changeover between the stratified combustion and a homogeneous combustion.
